Shampooing hair extensions

Washing your hair well will keep both your hair extensions and the bond to your natural hair in great condition.

We suggest using cleansing shampoo products from the Paul Mitchell range. All the products in this growing range are of the highest quality and ideal for using with hair extensions. You can buy both shampoo and other products from our salons.

Conditioning

Longer hair can tangle and when this happens, the harsh brushing technique can break and split hair. A moisturising conditioner is essential and leaves your hair feeling soft and silky – and looking good.

After a deep cleansing shampoo to remove the build-up of natural oils in your hair, we recommend using a quality conditioning product. Apply the conditions from the mid-length of your hair to the tips. There is no need to use the conditioner around the root of your hair as this can damage the bond.

Once rinsed, lightly towel dry your hair and a leave-in conditioner to prevent tangles. We also strongly advise using a heat protector spray so that your hair and extensions are protected against the harsh heat of the hairdryer and heat styling tools.

Brushing your hair extensions

Regularly brushing keeps your hair extensions looking and feeling natural. A comb or brush with wide spaces between the bristles that are fine and soft is the best to use. These brushes and combs tend to be different from the ones you would normally choose.

A fine, wide-spaced comb or brush de-tangles the hair without splitting or snagging, essential for keeping your hair extensions in great condition between salon visits.

Blow drying and styling

Both the hair products we use can be styled with heat tools.

  • After shampooing and conditioning, squeeze excess moisture from your hair
  • Towel dry thoroughly but gently
  • Apply a lightweight detangling spray and brush through gently
  • For heat styling, use a heat protector spray that prevents damage to your hair
  • Styling products should be applied from the mid-length of your hair through to the tips

When using a hairdryer and heated styling products such as tongs, avoid using them too close to your scalp and bonds as heat will cause this bond to breakdown. Your expert technician will show you the best way of heat styling and drying your hair.
