Shampooing hair extensions

Washing your hair well will keep both your hair extensions and the bond to your natural hair in great condition.

We suggest using cleansing shampoo products from the Paul Mitchell range. All the products in this growing range are of the highest quality and ideal for using with hair extensions. You can buy both shampoo and other products from our salons.

Conditioning

Longer hair can tangle and when this happens, the harsh brushing technique can break and split hair. A moisturising conditioner is essential and leaves your hair feeling soft and silky – and looking good.

After a deep cleansing shampoo to remove the build-up of natural oils in your hair, we recommend using a quality conditioning product. Apply the conditions from the mid-length of your hair to the tips. There is no need to use the conditioner around the root of your hair as this can damage the bond.

Once rinsed, lightly towel dry your hair and a leave-in conditioner to prevent tangles. We also strongly advise using a heat protector spray so that your hair and extensions are protected against the harsh heat of the hairdryer and heat styling tools.

Brushing your hair extensions

Regularly brushing keeps your hair extensions looking and feeling natural. A comb or brush with wide spaces between the bristles that are fine and soft is the best to use. These brushes and combs tend to be different from the ones you would normally choose.

A fine, wide-spaced comb or brush de-tangles the hair without splitting or snagging, essential for keeping your hair extensions in great condition between salon visits.

Blow drying and styling

Both the hair products we use can be styled with heat tools.

  • After shampooing and conditioning, squeeze excess moisture from your hair
  • Towel dry thoroughly but gently
  • Apply a lightweight detangling spray and brush through gently
  • For heat styling, use a heat protector spray that prevents damage to your hair
  • Styling products should be applied from the mid-length of your hair through to the tips

When using a hairdryer and heated styling products such as tongs, avoid using them too close to your scalp and bonds as heat will cause this bond to breakdown. Your expert technician will show you the best way of heat styling and drying your hair.

Protecting your hair during the cold period

It is very important for you to take extra special care of your hair within these few cold months of the year. The cold temperatures are well known for having a negative impact on your hair. However majority of people care more for their hair in summer months than winter months.   Below are 6 ways to help you look after your hair in these colder months:

1) REGULAR HAIR CUTS/TRIMS
As temperatures drop people’s heating get turned up which has a negative affect on your hair. Indoor heating drys your hair which can lead to split ends which can cause frizz and hair breakage.

2) DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Dehydration plays a huge role in damaging your hair and scalp. Keep your scalp healthy and your hair will be happy.

3) WEAR HATS/SCARFS
Believe it or not cold air and wind has a drying affect on your hair. Keep it wrapped up this winter

4) USE TREATMENT CONDITIONERS
Treatment conditioners add moisture to your hair. For thicker hair use hot oil treatments too. For finer hair stick to treatment conditioners, as hot oils may make your hair lank.

5) SWAP YOUR MOUSSE FOR A BALM
Hair mousse is well known for containing alcohol, although a great hold it can dry hair. Use a moisturising balm to add moisture but still get hold.

6) EXTRA TOWEL DRYING TIME
Try to towel dry your hair for a longer time rather than rushing straight for the hairdryer. The less blowdrying you do the better

Tips on Wedding Hair

Wedding season is fastly approaching …. The day most women have dreamt about since they were young.

This is one of the biggest and happiest days of your life, however near enough every bride becomes very stressed about how to have their hair on the day. With this in mind we have created some tips to help you get through that stressful time.

1) Be you
Alot of women have elaborate dreams of massive princess style hair on their big day. The best thing you can do is to not have your hair completely different than you would normally wear it.

2) Think of your dress
If your dress has a detailed back or a laced front and neckline it would be a shame to cover it with your hair down. Have your hair up for a sophiscated look while showing off your gorgeous dress.

3) Climate
If you are getting married somewhere hot the last think you will want is your hair sticking to your back most of the day. You also have to bare in mind that you may get hot during the evening while dancing.

4) Hair Jewellery
Whether you are wearing a veil or not hair jewellery really makes a huge difference to your look. Add a bit of bling and sparkle for your extra special day

5) Hair trial
Many brides do not want a hair trial as it is an extra cost. Take my advice and pay for the trial as it will allow you to be more confident on the morning of your wedding as you know exactly what your having.

6) Listen to your stylist
If your stylist wants your hair freshly washed or even a day old on your wedding morning then listen. They are giving you these instructions for a reason. Generally hair up and curls stay in better on day old hair.

The Difference between Balayage and Ombré

Balayage has been around for a while but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular colour requests within the salon. Balayage is a technique for highlighting hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way to create a graduated, natural looking effect. The word Balayage comes from the French meaning ‘to sweep’ or ‘to paint’. It allows for a sun-kissed look, with softer less noticeable regrowth lines. This technique works on both light and dark hair and most lengths other than very short cropped hair styles.

When having Balayage in a salon, it is important to explain what you are going for as Balayage and Ombré are often mistaken for one another. As hairdressers ourselves we recommend finding pictures of what you do like and what you really do not like as it gives us a better idea of what you want to achieve. If you are unsure on what you would like we offer one to one free colour consultations and if you haven’t had colour with us before you have a colour test done prior to your appointment.

Ombré came on the scene a few years ago and was a huge trend amongst celebrities. Many people tend to get Ombré also mixed up with another technique called ‘Dip Dye’. Whilst dip dyeing leaves an obvious edgy line, Ombré is a much more subtle option. It’s a colouring technique that looks like a grown out colour. Ombré is also good for people who like having funkier, brighter fashion colours in their hair. Ombré is not just designed for the natural browns and blondes like in Balayage. You can incorporate red, pink, purple and even blue into an Ombré look as long as your ends are lighter than your natural colour. If you find your ends are not lighter than your root colour this can be achieved by your stylist lifting the ends with bleach.

With Ombré you can decide how high or low the colour blend is. Whether it is just the very ends of the hair or the majority of the hair very close to the root. This look can also be achieved with just hair extensions if you feel taking the plunge on your own hair is a step too far. Are you allergic to colour?

Elumen from Goldwell is a colour that is almost impossible to be allergic to. So now you really can achieve the colour you have always wanted. Elumen is a colour that eluminates the hair intensively from inside out to achieve intense, perfect results for colour professionals.

Goldwell Elumen colours are durable and healthy looking, while packing up to 76% more colour intensity and 37% more shine than other comparable products. Elumen comes in a wide range of colours from the natural blondes and browns to bright fashion colours. It is also peroxide and ammonia free, this makes the product odour free and more gentle on the hair.

How Does It Work?

The magnet effect is what makes Elumen unique. Your hair has a positive charge and Elumen is a negatively charged product. So it draws pigment deep inside the hair where they hold securely to the hair. This one of a kind product also fills in the porous areas of the hair improving the structure and condition of the hair. This allows it to reflect the light perfectly, leaving your hair with the ultimate shine.

It is also important to use Elumen shampoo and conditioner to achieve long lasting results from your hair colour. Elumen also has a product called Lock which reduces the washout of Elumen and increases durability. This is a product for professional use only and it is applied to all hair that is coloured with Elumen hair colour. We apply this once we have shampooed and conditioned your hair. Leaving this on for 5 minutes locks in the colour, giving you long lasting results.
