Causes

Split ends or ‘Trichoptilosis’ happens when the hair’s protective cuticle is stripped away from the ends of hair fibres.. It happens when the natural oils from the scalp fail to reach the ends or when cortex loses moisture and the hair begins to unravel like a rope. Other reasons are; Dry scalp, Exposure to extreme temperature and chemical products like relaxers and hair colour, Lack of nourishment, Excessive dying, Vigorous brushing and backcombing, Use of metallic combs and brushes, Brushing hair when it is still wet, Use of uncovered elastic bands on the hair, Use of satin pillows and repeated use of heated appliances like irons or hair blow dryers.

When the hair is exposed in extreme temperatures or not enough oil or lack of health, it ends with split ends. The cause of splitting is usually related to dry hair, but the dryness and damage can be confined to just the very ends of the hair rather than the entire length. It is in fact very common to find hair, which is in good condition throughout most of its length but splitting along the last few centimetres. As you will appreciate to treat a whole head of hair for dryness when in fact only the ends are in need of care is opening the door to additional problems. Healthy hair is defined by thick, shiny and bouncing hair without split ends.

Trimming

Once the hair is split the only cure is to trim it. Image Group London will trim your hair for you. Looking in a natural light source we will be able to see the split ends properly.

The vitamin for hair: vitamin H

We all try many products in order to maintain healthy looking hair and it is worth buying good quality products from your hairdresser. However what we eat counts as well. It is very important to maintain a well balanced diet that will look after our hair long term.

Many shampoos and conditioners contain the B complex, it strengthens the hair follicles. Part of the B complex is a vitamin called vitamin H (biotin) known as the hair vitamin, because a deficiency in it may lead to thinning hair or even hair loss, it can also cause dry scaly skin and is the cause of greying hair.

Vitamin H (biotin) can be depleted in the body by alcohol, eating foods that contain vitamin H will restore the body’s balance.

Vitamin H is found in a variety of foods such as:-
Most fruit and vegetables ( especially apples)
Dry roasted peanuts
Soybeans
Brewers yeast ( marmite)
Sardines
Whole grains ( wholemeal bread)
Egg yolks (cooked)

Vitamin H is naturally created by the body and a deficiency is rare, however eating a healthy diet is good, because, you are what you eat!
